This is a truly gigantic tree – both in girth and towering height. I’ve always thought of it as the most impressive tree in Tatton Park: not irresistibly huggable like the sweet chestnut at SJ74688088, nor as heroic-looking as the sweet chestnut at SJ74798053, and it lacks the elegance of the towering beech at SJ75157941, and its conventional-looking bark certainly doesn’t fascinate the eye at close quarters with jewel-like encrustations like the gnarled sweet chestnut at SJ74808051, but for sheer dominating size it tops the bill.
