  • I visited this tree with a group of ATH recorders on 3/8/2008, when Ted Green gave us a very interesting tour of the oldest oaks to be found in the park. Of those still clinging to life, as opposed to decaying stumps, Ted thinks this is the oldest, possibly as much as 1200 yrs. old. Incredible to think that it was growing here as a mature oak when William the Conqueror first came to Windsor Park ! I think he referred to it as King Offa's Oak, but I'm not sure.

  • This tree is recorded in the Ancient Tree Hunt register of named trees as The Conqueror's Oak or Kings Oak. Andrew OakLay volunteer verifier

  • I was fortunate enough to be allowed to visit this tree by an extremely kind warden 3 days ago. For something believed to be 1300 years old, it has a live, vigorous crown and looks as if it can grow for a couple more centuries. It is believed to have germinated during the time of King Offa of Mercia in the 8th century AD. Incredible to think of how much history this massive tree must have witnessed- I even thought that the Conqueror's Oak nearby could have germinated from it. As far as I understand, this is the oldest oak in the UK (though not the biggest). Maybe it is for the best that it is on private land, as a layer of protection for the tree
