Trees of National Special Interest (TNSI)
Although it is certainly a planted tree and probably associated with Capability Brown’s relandscaping of the deer-park at Petworth in West Sussex, this Common Lime (Tilia × europaea) is one of the estate’s oldest trees. Lime timber is soft but has an elastic strength, enough to hold together the three parts of this example’s hollow bole.
