This tree is recorded on the ATH Register of Named Trees
One of the few surviving remnants of the mediaeval hunting forest, mostly cleared to construct the Great Dunmow aerodrome in WWII. Considered by some to be 1,000 years old but its huge burred base exaggerates the girth. At 2.5m the girth is about 6m which is a more realistic reference if attempting to estimate its age.
