This tree is a Magnolia according to the head gardener
I can see why the staff got the identity of this tree confused with Tulip Tree, which is in the magnoliaceae family. I would imagine veteran Tulip Trees are very rare in Cornwall - they tend to grow best in the S. East and E. Anglia.
