  • This entry has been completely rewritten to reflect condition of tree as at October 2025.

  • There is a detailed account of this tree (with pre-2020 photo) in Aljos Farjon`s `Ancient Oaks`, 2nd edition (2022) pp.225-226. The pre-fragmented girth is given as 9.19m. The girth given in our record above should be treated as a minimum figure, as vigorous bramble growth made it impossible to measure the tree below 1.65m height.

  • Aljos Farjon’s Domesday Oak is in fact nearby tree ID43692. Park staff are, however, adamant that this smaller tree is the Domesday Oak. Please be aware that at least two of the photos in tree record 43692 are of tree 43691 ie this tree!
