wonderful tree, from the celts to the presant day this yew has seen it all.still in remarkable condition and still growing,a true surviver.
Magnificent old yew in churchyard at Church of Saint Helen, Church Town, Darley Dale. Back in 1824 Ebenezer Rhodes (Peak Scenery)describes a single trunk to about 12 feet, with a girth of 34 feet, then splitting into two main trunks upwards. He estimated the age as 600 years. In 1906 J.B.Firth (Highways and Byways in Derbyshire) quotes similar statistics but says estimates of age range from 600 to 2000 years! The information board at the tree quotes an age of 2000 years. No matter which is the more accurate estimate of age, this is a superb old tree.
