This tree was a seed in a cone collected by Charles Kingsley (the rector of the church here) in Mariposa Grove, Yosemite CA, USA in 1874. He died the following year, and his daughter Lucas Malet (the novelist) potted the seed which became this tree. So, in 2025 the tree will be 150 years old. The Mount Sequoia on the hill to the south is a sibling from the same cone, planted at the same time, and a comparison of the sizes of the two trees is instructive. The churchyard one is obviously enjoying the nutrition from centuries of buried bodies, and is a reminder that churchyard trees (especially yews) can be younger than their sizes suggest.
