The Mitre Oak at Norchard in Worcestershire was a familiar landmark to wayfarers for centuries, but now survives almost unnoticed beside the A449 dual carriageway, behind garden railings and shrouded in ivy. This once tall tree was cut back to a high stump in 2004 to prevent its falling into the road.

The mitre oak is mentioned in the flight of Charles II after Boscobel see http://nq.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/issue_pdf/frontmatter_pdf/s4-I/24.pdf
There is an interesting account - with photos - of the shortening of the Mitre Oak in 2004 at https://www.wbrc.org.uk/WORCRECD/Issue%2016/recent_highlights.htm
