The ancient yew at Buckland parish church, Dover, has a remarkable story. In 1880 it was decided to double the length of the church nave. Rather than destroying the yew, which grew by the west door, it was decided to move it. W. Barron and Son of Derbyshire, with many years’ experience of moving mature trees, were engaged; they isolated a five metre square block of ground which included all the major roots, battened this block with planks, dug a trench, and used pulleys and rollers to drag the tree 17 metres to its current spot.
