For a Silver Birch, it’s trunk is very large.
The leaves are quite rounded so this could be Downy birch.. Needs confirmation
Start at Hill End, DL13 2SX and park in the lay-by just passed the cattle grid. Put your wellies on and walk west, (half way) up the slight gradient with the wall on your right and passed the allotment, there’s a gate with sign on, High Dryburnside. Go through this metal gate with the sign on (your on a designated footpath) and walk straight through to the next timber gate, then go to the next metal gate, which is next to Peak Side. With Peak Side on your left, walk past it (you are still on a foot path) and with the wall to your left, go over the stone stile. Go down this gradient, following the stream and go over the (you are now on Weardale Way) timber ladder stile. In front of you is the Ancient Downy Birch 219382 and in the distance, left on the commercial wood is the Ancient Hawthorn tree 219623
