  • I first noticed this venerable sweet chestnut when walking the old drove road (a right of way) through Glen Eagles in April this year. I called it St Mungo's Tree because it is beside St Mungo's Farm and close to St Mungo's Well. The glen has a long ecclesiatical history - Glen Eagles is thought to derive from Gleann Eaglaise, Gaelic for Church Glen. St Mungo's Chapel is farther down the glen. I returned late June to see how the tree looked when in leaf. It appears very healthy, despite some stag's head branches in the crown and a much burred trunk. Over the years it has grown into the stone wall built beside it, incorporating into the trunk objects lying on top of the wall, including a glass bottle.
