This 700-year-old tree has sadly been hacked away at and 'tidied up'. A tree that has been untouched and outlived by at least 17 generations of humans. The UK is one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world with about half of its biodiversity left. With COP26 looming it seems we can't even look after a single nationally and ecologically important tree. The oak, which is on private land, should at least have had a Tree Protection Order on it, but under our system an application has to be made for each tree. As we are in a climate emergency the default position should be reversed and all trees should automatically be under TPO’s so that any planned work has to be approved.
